an ode to september

September. One of my favorite months of the year. There’s something so organic about the atmosphere of September, like a pile of rich soil or the feeling of a cold coastal breeze. September welcomes the harmonious blend of woolen handknits overtop summer dresses, days spent feeling the sun on your face and evenings spent feeling the warmth of a bonfire on your hands. It tastes like roasted carrots, black coffee, farro salads, dried apricots, and flaky gallettes. It looks like fresh flowers on a dark woven tablecloth, candle lit dinners, long walks through the park watching the first autumn leaves drift through the sky, summer’s last evening trips to the local ice cream spot.
I was born in September. I’ll turn 27 in just a few weeks. As per usual, I find myself feeling reflective as my life turns the page on another year. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that aging continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. I rarely find myself yearning for the past, my mind feels consumed with curiosity for the future. I see how much in my life has changed in just a few short years, and I feel restless wondering what lies ahead. For now, I try to bring my mind to the present moment, living each day with gratitude and appreciation for what is.
Though my YouTube presence has been quiet in August, Allwool Fiber has been anything but stagnant. I’ve been negotiating partnerships behind the scenes, working to establish more ways to expand my participation in the fiber world. It feels surreal to be making concrete progress towards my goal of a career spent halfway as a nurse, halfway as a fiber artist. I’m really hoping I can have more opportunities for staging products, like these images I created for my Purl Soho affiliate link promotion:

I had a lot of fun creating this months mood board. Let’s chat through some of the elements and what’s been inspiring me as of late:
Scrap-busting projects
I don’t know why, but something about the cool late summer breeze is making me want to make something patch work/scrapy. I’ve been thinking about this Stine Und Stitch patchwork blanket almost as much as I’ve been thinking about Woolly Mammoth Fibre Company’s beautiful crochet coverlet.

(Mostly) all over ribbed tops (particularly in taupe shades)
Including the word “mostly” here to include the incredible Miu Top by Una Gil. The Ribbed Raglan by Purl Soho in the mood board is another favorite, I can’t help but feel so drawn to the form that large swaths of ribbing create. So, so chic.

Striped socks
I recently acquired some sock yarn from Purl Soho in the shades stillwater blue and reindeer brown— and I’m thinking about making a muted striped sock with them. Probably will use something similar to this free pattern.

The infamous Gardenheir Clogs
I know…I know. If you’re chronically on Pinterest like I am, you know these have completely dominated the feeds of crunchy garden girls. I can’t help it, I just love a kind of ugly shoe! I likely won’t purchase these as I really have no need for yet *another* pair of slip on shoes, but I am completely obsessed with how they look with a knitted ribbed sock. If you see me in these shoes in the near future, consider them a birthday present to myself.

Pajama tops + slouchy pants + utilitarian shoe equation
I love nothing more than the trend of wearing nightgowns or nightgown-looking-tops with a pair of slouchy pants and a clog or rain boot. All I want to do is look like I’ve rolled out of bed, effortlessly thrown my hair up, and thrown on a pair of utilitarian shoes that will allow me to trek through any kind of terrain. Throw on a handknit cardigan on top— and you’ve realllyyy got my attention.

Chunky hammered silver rings with or without gemstones
This is a completely unoriginal thing to include as chunky silver rings have been “trending” for quite some time, but I’m here to encourage you to look past the trend and see it as an opportunity to support a local jewelry designer, Etsy seller, or explore jewelry making classes in your local area. I really believe these are timeless pieces.

Finally, here are some acoustic tunes to get you into the late summer, early autumn mood:

I recommend James N Watts for that kind of jewelry! He does amazing knitting patterns and just started making jewelry
Love any wool recommendations but will be checking your playlist this month. Happy birthday when it comes!
